Student Drop Off/Pick Up
Parents are asked to drop off students in the morning on the south side of 7th Street next to the playground fences. School busses will drop off immediately behind you. After school, parents may pick up kindergarten students and their siblings in the southeast parking lot. Students in grades 1-5 may be picked-up on the north side of 7th street (school personnel will help students cross). For students’ safety, busses will park on the playground blacktop area on the northeast area of our school. Vehicles will not be allowed to park there, as this would block our bus drivers.
Parents that come early and wait for their children to get out of class are asked to wait by the office area. Students will be dismissed from their classrooms when the school bell rings at the end of instructional hours.
V & O assemblies
The Washington family gets together once a month to celebrate victories and talk about opportunities for improvement. The assemblies take place on one Thursday afternoon a month and last about 30 minutes. The students, together with the staff, celebrate all the amazing things that are witnessed at Washington. The assembly usually begins with celebrating students with perfect attendance from the month before, it concludes with the infamous lunch bag award. In between we celebrate People Respecting Others Award (PRO); this is given to students who are caught going above and beyond to respect others in the building.
The BUG (Bringing Up Grades) award is given to any student that is working really hard to improve their grades. We also take the time to celebrate any special awards such as the Fire Awareness Poster contest.
Next, we focus on opportunities for improvement. This begins with impromptu skits by students who are courageous enough to attempt the JAR-Just Acting Right. The JAR is full of short scenarios and students get the opportunity to act out the situation by Just Acting Right.
We conclude each assembly with a drum roll and the announcement of the Lunch Bag Awards. This award goes to the class that follows lunch procedures the best. These assemblies promote a family atmosphere!!!
Lunch Procedures
Lunch time at Washington Elementary has become a very enjoyable time for students and staff alike. The playground is big and has a lot of opportunities for play. Each noon aide is assigned a zone, the playground has 5 zones. Each classroom gets the opportunity to play at a different zone each day. The noon aides provide activities and appropriate support for the designated grade level. For example, you may witness a noon aide playing “Duck, duck, goose” with kindergartners in the field and the next day monitoring a kick ball game organized by 5th graders. The next day those same kindergartners may be playing tag, trying to get the basketball through the hoop or swinging on the swings. It gives all students the opportunity to play and experience all the playground has to offer. Another change in lunch procedures is that students are expected to spend 20 minutes of their 40 minute lunch eating. Each grade is dismissed after the 20 minutes to play or return to class.
